We held our meeting last night in the Parkview Hotel
In attendance: Michael Lane, Elise Hanley, Catherine Hurley, Rebecca
O'Brien, Guy Garrett, Maureen Turner, Muireann Dalton, Lisa Coughlan ,
Deirdre Whitfield.
Apologies: Edel Shortt, Cllr James O'Shaughnessy.
We would like to thank Deirdre Whitfield from Wicklow County Council for attending our meeting and also for her input.
We would also like to thank Fiona Carroll for her great fundraising ideas which will be discussed further at our next meeting.
We discussed our upcoming fundraiser, Playground4Newtown Table Quiz,
which will be held on Thursday 24th May in the Village Inn @ 8.30pm, 20
euro per table of 4, trophies for the winners and also a raffle will be
held on the night, we look forward to seeing you all there.
Thanks to the Parkview Hotel for the use of the room for our meetings.
Our next meeting will be held on the 28th May @7pm in the Parkview Hotel. |

Entry is only €20 per table, Trophies for winners, Raffle and a
fun night for all.

We held our
meeting last night in the parents room of Newtown Primary School:
In attendance: Michael Lane, Rebecca O'Brien, Lisa Coughlan, Edel
Shortt, Catherine Hurley, Maureen Turner, Guy Garrett, Elise Hanley,
Alison Healy.
We would like to welcome our newest member Elise Hanley.
We would like to thank Alison Healy from County Wicklow Partnership who
gave us some great information and outlined the process for applying
for funding.
Guy Garrett gave a report of the meeting he had with Wicklow County
Council in which they discussed the sites.
Guy has also submitted the application for a grant.
Our fundraiser will be a table quiz which will be held on Thursday May
24TH in Mountkennedy Inn @ 8.30PM we really hope to see the local
people come out and support us and enjoy a good night out.
Our next meeting will be
held on Monday 14th May in the Parkview Hotel at 7.00pm

Purpose
Playground4Newtown was
formed in September-2011 with the sole purpose of providing a Community
Playground in Newtownmountkennedy
Our Mission
Listed below
are our principle objectives
Wicklow County Council
Contact the Area Engineer of Wicklow County Council
to initiate the process
Site Location
Identify a suitable site based on the following criteria
- Location having regard to walking distance from the
centre of the
village, School (Newtownmountkennedy PS), the churches (St Joseph's and
St Matthew's), the Community Centre
- Safety for children in accessing the Playground
- Visibility from roads, etc
- Security
Design
The following will determine the design of the Playground
- The chosen site
- The Theme be it, natural, wood or primary colours.
- The Ages to be catered for, ie 1-5 years and 5+, etc
- The Equipment, slides, swings, climbing structures,
etc
Funding
Playground4Newtown will
have the task of raising a proportion of the overall cost of the
playground
Tender
Playground4Newtown will
in partnership with Wicklow County Council be responsible for the
tendering of the following
- Equipment
- Installation
- Site Works

Benefits for children of a Playground
- Play promotes children’s development, learning,
creativity and independence
- Play fosters social inclusion. It helps children to
understand the people and places in their lives, learn about their
environment and develop a sense of community. It helps socially
excluded children interact with others
- Play keeps children healthy and active
- Play helps reduce the involvement of children in
anti-social behaviour
- Play allows children find out about themselves, their
abilities their interests
- Play is therapeutic. It helps children to deal with
difficult or painful circumstances such as emotional stress or medical
treatment
- Play gives children the chance to let off steam and have fun

The community at large with increased social and health benefits.
Playground Costs
The total cost of providing a typical community playground is estimated
at between €100,000 to €120,000.
A proportion of this amount will be raised by Playground4Newtown.
The exact cost to provide the playground and the local
contribution will depend on the following
- The size of the playground
- The amount and quality of equipment provided
- Site costs
- Security arrangements
We
enacted a constitution for the Playground4Newtown group
at our Meeting on Monday November 21, 2011
