Very Important Update
Elise Hanley, Guy Garrett and Michael Lane on behalf of Playground4Newtown met Joe Lane (Director of Services) and Deirdre Whitfield (Administrative Officer) of the Community, Cultural and Social Department of Wicklow County Council on Friday February 22

Playground4Newtown
  • We outlined our progress to date
  • We briefed the Joe and Deirdre on the status of the site, regarding planning and the Licence Agreement, etc
  • The chosen design from Crawford’s and the budget, etc, were all discussed
Wicklow County Council
Joe and Deirdre stated the council’s objective of securing both an ‘Adventure Park’ in a woodland setting and also the playground as proposed by Playground4Newtown. The objectives and plan of action of the councils are as follows

Preferred Option
  • The council plan to invest a budget in excess of €250,000 in the ‘Adventure Park’.
  • No time scale was available
  • The Council is supportive of our proposed community playground
  • Furthermore the council offered to contribute 20% to our budget, subject to the availability of funding from the Wicklow Rural Partnership Scheme.
  • We are to continue as planned with our project
  • We will continue with our application for funding from the Wicklow Rural Partnership Scheme
  • Joe and Deirdre did express some reservations about our site
  • The overall budget for both projects, including the funding from the Wicklow Rural Partnership Scheme is estimated at €400,000
Alternative Option
If the ‘Adventure Park’ does not proceed then the Council propose a community based playground only as per our proposal, with the following additions
  • The playground would be considerably larger than the one that we propose
  • The playground would also cater for older children
  • A Multi Use Games Area (Mugga) would also be incorporated
  • The total budget would be circa €250,000
  • All of the above would be similar in size to the playground in St. Lawrence Park, Ballynerrin, Wicklow, (which Joe gave us a tour of)
Footnote
  • Playground4Newtown greatly appreciate the time afforded to us and the proposals made by Wicklow County Council
  • The playground and/or the ‘Adventure Park’ will be of huge benefit to the people of Newtownmountkennedy and the surrounding areas
  • Further meetings are to be arranged to between Playground4Newtown and Wicklow County Council to further advance our campaign
